App Icon Design Tips: Making a Great First Impression

Your app icon is the first thing users see in search results. A great icon can significantly improve click-through and download rates.

App Icon Best Practices

Keep It Simple

One central element, not a collage. Simple icons are recognizable at 29×29px (search result size).

Use Bold Colors

High-contrast, saturated colors stand out against white/light gray search result backgrounds.

Avoid Text

Text in icons becomes illegible at small sizes. Use symbols, shapes, or your logo instead.

Test at Small Sizes

Preview your icon at 29×29px. If it's not clear, simplify further. Most users see it tiny.

Be Unique

Research competitor icons. Avoid similar colors or shapes. Stand out in your category.

Consider Rounded Corners

Apple and Google auto-apply rounded corners/masks. Design within the safe zone.

A/B Testing Your App Icon

Both App Store and Google Play support icon A/B testing:

  • Google Play: Store Listing Experiments let you test icons directly
  • App Store: Product Page Optimization supports icon testing

Test these icon variations:

  • Different color schemes
  • Different symbols/shapes
  • With/without border
  • Photo vs illustration style
  • Different background colors

Run tests for at least 7 days. Even a 2% improvement in icon click-through rate can mean thousands of additional downloads.
